Earlier this month we reported ona unearthly jellylike tubefound floating in the breaker off the glide of Australia . Speculation burst as to what the freakish creature might be , with many suggesting that the translucent piston chamber provided a rare coup d’oeil of a animate being known as a giant pyrosome .

But now nautical biologist and jellyfish specialistRebecca Helmhas thrown her hat into the band ,   suggesting that what we ’re seeing is not a pyrosome at all but potentially a giant mass of squid eggs . Havingpreviously written about these videosand images that tend to go viral every so often , Helm admitted that “ identifying long blob animals is a rather esoteric nontextual matter . ”

But there are a few clue intimate the tube is not all it seemed , Live Sciencereported . First off pyrosomes , which are related to sea squirt , be given to have an external coating , which this giant ocean blob seems to lack . The affair in the picture is almost see - through in show .

Yet it is not so much the semitransparent nature of the object that gives away its true identity , rather the appearance of lots of lilliputian dots . This suggests that it might be a huge mass of squid nut , which characteristically share the aim ’s   rosy-cheeked tint and are normally arranged in a string - like style . However , the lack of close - up double of the find make it difficult to say for sealed what it is .

And if in the ending , it was indeed the nut of a cephalopod , what gargantuan monster of the thick would have been responsible for make this monolithic tube of doom ? More likely than not , it was in all probability a modest diamond calamary , as discussed in a paper put out inZooKeys . These beasties tend to grow to around 1 beat ( 3 feet ) in duration , reaching a weight of around   20 kg ( 44 pounds ) .

As always , however , we ca n’t be 100 percent sure that the baseball field calamary is creditworthy . But it seems probable that it was indeed the culprit , even though egg mass morphology can variegate quite a moment .

If this makes it seem somewhat less exciting , then fear not . Helmwent on to writethat “ if anything , this is more exciting . ” In the eternal expanse of the sea , these egg mass are astonishingly rare . If Helm had been there , she would have been “ screaming with pleasure through [ her ] regulator . ”
