Queen Camilla attends the State Opening of Parliament at the Houses of Parliament on November 7, 2023 in London, England. The speech delivered by the monarch but written by the government sets out the government’s priorities for the coming year. This session of parliament will lead up to the next general election.

Courtiers then looked back toQueen Elizabeth’s first State Opening of Parliament as sovereign in 1952.

Queen Elizabeth II bends for a private word with Prince Charles as, with the Duke of Edinburgh (in naval uniform), she stood in Buckingham Palace quadrangle for the march past of the Guards. The Queen and the Duke had just returned in procession from the House of Lords, where the Queen had opened the first Parliamentary session of her reign.

In another fashion footnote, Queen Elizabeth also wore the Diamond Diadem for the first time at the first State Opening of Parliament of her reign. Queen Elizabeth would wear the headpiece again on the way to her coronation at Westminster Abbey in June 1953.

Queen Camilla is known to follow Queen Elizabeth’s style lead, from using clear umbrellas to carrying aLauner clutch, the late sovereign’s go-to handbag brand. On Tuesday, Queen Camilla had one of her most regal moments yet in the Diamond Diadem and continued a historic tradition.

Queen Camilla follows Queen Adelaide, Queen Victoria, Queen Alexandra, Queen Mary,Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Motherand her late mother-in-law Queen Elizabeth in donning the diadem.

Because Queen Elizabeth was monarch and gave the Queen’s Speech instead, the address was also the first King’s Speech in over 70 years.

It’s not required for the heir to the throne to attend the State Opening of Parliament, and the Prince of Wales, 41, is in Singapore for a major event of his own: the 2023Earthshot Prize Awards. Prince William arrived in Singapore on Sunday for the inaugural Earthshot Week and had a packed day of engagements on Monday before the glamorous prize ceremony on Tuesday.
