The video above , from theNY Times , outlines how Deepwater Horizon ’s blowout preventer — and more specifically , the “ blind shear ram ” designed to exclude down the well in consequence of a blowout — was supposed to work , and why it did n’t .

BP workers did attempt to deploy the blind shear wad by tally the exigency push button , but the system , designed with too few computer backup measures , did not do as design . Today , at least , it ’s impossible to know on the button why that is , but there ’s plenty of grounds showing that romp preventers are n’t the unfailing failsafe they ’re advertised to be .
