As a moviegoer , few things are as exciting as instantaneously being compelled by the world being built on screen door — that feeling of dive into a whole novel universe filled with unanswered question and fascinating part that , for the next two hour , you get to learn all about . The new film Hotel Artemis is like that . It set up a world you ’ll desperately want to experience more about and see where the story lead . Ultimately , though , it struggles to pay off .
save and maneuver by Drew Pearce , Hotel Artemis is lay in a near - succeeding Los Angeles where people have begin to riot over a piss shortage . During the sidesplitter , crime upsurge , injury mount , but a few favorable outlaw can essay refuge at the Hotel Artemis . It ’s an exclusive hospital for injured criminals with a very limited bit of rooms , all of which are overseen by a single nursemaid , played by Oscar winner Jodie Foster . The nurse is wise , careful , and no - nonsense . But , when the hotel set out to get a trivial too full for her comfortableness , she ’ll have to make some decisions that will shake off her out of a long - stand comfort geographical zone .
A scifi crime saga starring Foster would be fairly intriguing on its own , but Pearce has get together anequally impressive supporting shape around her . There ’s Dave Bautista as Foster ’s correct - hand man and muscle , and Sterling K. Brown and Brian Tyree Henry toy two crook whose entry to the Artemis gets the whole floor going . Charlie Day and Sofia Boutella play mysterious patients , Jeff Goldblumowns the whole place , Zachary Quinto is his Word , and Jenny Slate run a pig who makes the berth more complicated .

With that mold and setting , Hotel Artemis has all the potency in the public . And , for most of the motion picture , it hold up up to it . Pearce ’s script stretch out like a top - notch crime thriller , with character motivations and plot construction wander in and out of each other , slowly uncovering the secret at hand . Tensions continue to rise with the knowledge that , finally , they ’ll seethe over . Each of the actors mention above is at their frenzied proficient in the photographic film , toy high-pitched - strung , brainsick criminals with a lustfulness for descent and activeness . ( Bautista and Brown , in special , steal the picture . )
The look of the film , from the cinematography to the sets , feels like an ultra alky and pulpy Los Angeles offence thriller with a scifi crook . The action , though sparse , is vivid and kinetic . As the story unfolds , you ’ll be on the edge of your seat waiting to see how Pearce will take everything he ’s set up and bring it home in a satisfying , surprising direction .
And that ’s where Hotel Artemis lose us . Pearce has created such an interesting world with such excellent characters and plot of ground lines that by the time he get through the end of his level , we ca n’t help but be a little let down . The end works for the story but it just does n’t hail nigh to matching the possible and rising latent hostility the movie has display throughout . It just feel a little too predictable and canonic for such an splendid set - up .

Hotel Artemis is a solid lineament picture directorial debut for Pearce — author ofNo Heroics , Iron Man 3 , and more — who exhibits a on-key talent behind the television camera . It just so happens that this labyrinthine story may have been a bit too much for a first - time filmmaker to set about . And yet , the world - building is so strong and the earthly concern so fascinating , if another movie came out with any of these character , I ’d be there in a heartbeat .
Hotel Artemis opens June 8 .
