On Wednesday , Mark Zuckerberg face some tougher query from the House than he did in yesterday ’s Senate hearing . And one GOP Congressman decide to throw Zuck a ivory by bringing up his original sinning : Facemash . Mark did n’t seem happy .
Today ’s hearing has shown a potent divide in the job of inquiring coming from each party . As Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg face acute public scrutiny about privacy , surety , and election interference , House members on the Republican side have devoted a lot of time to stress that they do n’t like regulations . Missouri RepresentativeBilly Longattempted to paint an example of why regulations would be bad for initiation and seemed to give Zuck a little tough - love advice .
Zuckerberg loves to institute up Facebook ’s humble student residence room origins and it seems that Congressman Long wanted to take Zuckerberg on a walk down store lane by reminding him of where this all start and suggesting that a lack of regulation serve Facebook become the unstoppable force it is today . Zuckerberg did n’t seem to have a talking point quick when Long asked , “ What was Facemash , and is it still up and running ? ” Zuckerberg answered :

Congressman , Facemash was a prank site that I launch in college in my dorm room before I embark on facebook . There was a motion picture about this , or it said it was about this . It was unreadable verity . And the claim that Facemash was somehow connected to the development of Facebook — it is n’t . It was n’t —
Zuckerberg ’s response is also a bit of “ unclear truth . ” Facemash was arguably a precursor to Facebook . If nothing else it planted seeds for what the societal internet would become in so many regard . The site was a way for Harvard students to rank whether their peers werehot or not , foreshadowing the debasement and abasement we ’d all feel as societal media bump its foothold . AsWiredrecently pointed out , the site was created by “ nonconsensually scraping pictures of students at Harvard from the schoolhouse ’s intranet . ” neglect for privacy and intellectual property ? Check and check . It wasmassively popularon campus despite themisgivingsthat many students had about it . And it all came to an closing with the first Mark Zuckerberg public apology . He wrote in aletterin 2003 :
I understood that some part were still a little sketchy and I wanted some more clip to retrieve about whether or not this was really appropriate to loose to the Harvard residential district .

I hope you understand , this is not how I think of for things to go , and I apologize for any impairment done as a result of my disregard to consider how apace the site would spread and its consequences thereafter … I definitely see how my intention could be seen in the amiss light .
It does n’t seem like Long really empathise what this chapter in Zuckerberg ’s history means to him or the company that he afterward founded . “ I took it down — actually , it has nothing to do with Facebook , ” Zuckerberg tell the Congressman . Long was undismayed in charge out front with his lesson , telling the CEO :
But from that commencement , whether it was actually the source of Facebook or not , you ’ve come a long way . If I was you , a little bit of advice — Congress is good at two things : doing nothing and overreact . So far , we ’ve done nothing on Facebook since your inception in that Harvard hall way , many years ago . We ’ve done nothing on Facebook . We ’re getting quick to overreact , so just take that as a dead reckoning across the bow admonish to you .

Before Zuckerberg could react any further , Long launched into a fulmination about materialistic commentators Diamond and Silk getting theirFacebook pageboy suspended .
It ’s hard to say if Long ’s point was lose in this Facemash reminder . He was telling Zuckerberg that his business has become an enormous entity with small competition or limitation on what it can garner on its users . He was saying that it speedily find itself in that position because legislator never abuse in to make any judgments about how Facebook could be harmful to individuals , club , and the business community . And he was saying that Zuckerberg should make some quick change so that no authorities ever stop to deliberate those things .
If nothing else , Long made it clear that people like him would needs screw up whatever regulation they terminate up cobble together .
