Writes Howard :
Almost any cultural transaction involving a sum of money represent , as Samuel Johnson famously said of second wedlock , the triumph of hope over experience . We populate in a time when college enrollment in the humanness is declining precipitously , in beneficial part because major in such subjects seems improbable to result in gainful use in a strapped thriftiness and thus would be a waste matter of severely - make ( or exorbitantly borrow ) tuition fee dollar .
Somehow our culture has persuaded itself that the naked seeking for fiscal gain , often through the devising and trading , on monstrous amounts of ( very low-down interest ) borrowed money , of what Warren Buffett has called instrument of aggregated destruction , is a more pressing and honourable calling than the passionate by-line of trueness and beauty .
I ’ve tried to intimate that at least a lot of that chase can have gratifying economical issue . ( Plus it will not immerse us into an endless recession ! ) But that ’s not really the point . The point is truth and peach , without which our life will lack grace and significance and our civilization will be spiritually hollow out and the diachronic bottom stemma will be that future epochs will remember us as a rough-cut and anti-intellectual people who blow our bottomlessly fat ethnical inheritance for short - condition and nonmeaningful financial advantage .
And that is why you should major in English .
