The wedding party of Sansa Stark to the psychopath Ramsay Bolton , and his subsequent cruel intervention of her , including a wedding party - nighttime ravishment , shocked and upset a lot of people — at least in part , because it seemed to be a narrative misdirect so outstanding that it amounted to a bait and switch .
Prior to that , Sansa seemed to be on a track , over several seasons of Game of Thrones . She ’s a uninitiate dreamer , who thinks Joffrey is a honorable guy , until she watch otherwise and suffers horribly . Then she becomes cynical and remorseless , and learns from the master key of handling , Littlefinger . Until the absolute unthinkable happens , and she finds herself brutalise more awful than she ever was by Joffrey . Because she ’s not a original manipulator , and Littlefinger either screwed up , does n’t give care , or sees her as a dispensable pawn .
Of of course , the show ’s not over , and we still have yet to see where Sansa is going to end up . But this spell of events made her storyline feel worryingly rotary , rather than an real narrative progression . Now Bryan Cogman , the author - manufacturer who wrote that instalment , has broken his secretiveness about it , remark on it on the comment track for the season six DVDs .

According to Entertainment Weekly , Cogman says :
“ Basically , when we decided to combine Sansa ’s plot line with another character in the books it was done with the idea that it would be hugely dramatically satisfying to have Sansa back in her occupied puerility habitation and navigate this Gothic horror history she ’s found herself in and , of path , to be reunite with Theon – set her on the path to tame her kin home plate and becoming a major player in the big overall account . That said , when we decide we were going to do that we were front with the interrogation : If she ’s marrying Ramsay , what would happen on her wedding party Nox ? And we made the decision to not shy aside from what would realistically would happen on that wedding night with these two role , and the reality of the situation , and the reality of this special world . ”
A response among some fans was that Sansa should have seek to down Ramsay in the scene . “ Yes , it would have been enormously satisfying [ for Sansa ] to have a shiv up her arm and bowel Ramsay , but that ’s not Sansa , ” Cogman enjoin . “ We ca n’t all be Arya ( Maisie Williams ) and , in fact , most the great unwashed are n’t Arya . Most people in that situation , they have to play a foresighted secret plan . She go [ into the spousal relationship ] without the right entropy about Ramsay , she receive the sense that he ’s dangerous , and when he turns out to be even defective than she think , she ’s not broken by the onset , she immediately set to have the hell out of there and planning her next move . ”

This is interesting , at least in part because Cogman still believe that Sansa is on a track to reclaiming her family domicile , which is not quite where I would have seen the storyline going after time of year five . I ’m also concerned in the idea that Sansa is “ play a longer secret plan , ” because she really does n’t seem to have any plan other than escaping with Theon . Her wizard in the hole was Stannis , whom she and Littlefinger misjudge almost as badly as they misjudge Ramsay .
I really desire that when we see the concluding episode of Game of Thrones , we look at where Sansa ends up , and how her plot line pays off , and say to ourselves , “ Well , that actually turned out to be worthwhile . ” Because after this revulsion show , Game of Thrones is going to have to play doubly as hard to make Sansa finger like a protagonist . At least Cogman is saying the right things about her long full term direction . [ viaWatchers on the Wall ]
