DC ’s Man of Steel is in a strange place flop now . After kicking off DC ’s current existence of film , Henry Cavill ’s Clark Kent has gonefrom centripetal startopeculiar Justice League accelerator , then much nowhere to be seen in Warner ’s slate of approaching DC moving-picture show . But while his cinematic futureremains in flux , his earliest solar day are still being re - probe by the people who help oneself bring him to liveliness .
David S. Goyer reminisce about his physical process on write Man of Steel and his writing career at large — fromBladetoBatman Begins — as part of a new conversation with Backstory Magazine ’s Jeff Goldsmith bring out today as part of San Diego Comic - Con ’s virtual panels . But while Goyer could be candid , and rightfully gallant , about the desire to do new thing with funny book motion-picture show that head to the successes of Blade and Begins , returning to Man of Steel could only get up two of the pic ’s most talked about moments : the sacrifice of Jonathan Kent , and Superman’sexecution of Zod .

“ People have to think that that Clark was only meant to be about 17 at the time [ of Jonathan ’s expiry ] , ” Goyer say discussing the long - repeated complaint as to why the young Kryptonian did n’t just bolt out and save his adoptive Padre with his superhuman power . “ He was untested , young , did n’t understand the extent of his power . He also has his don over his head saying ‘ You ’ve got to be measured , when you step forward’ … I do n’t believe that that Clark , that 17 - year - erstwhile Clark , could ’ve saved Jonathan without revealing himself … I do n’t think he had the skill , I do n’t think he had the due date . I ’m not say he could n’t have pull through Jonathan , he might have , but I do n’t imagine he could ’ve done it without [ giving himself away ] . And Jonathan ’s point is that [ Clark ] is n’t old enough , is n’t mature enough , to take this on . ”
Interestingly , it ’s that immaturity and heedfulness of the consequence he faces by publicly unveil his baron that Goyer conceive drives Man of Steel’sclimactic , shocking struggle : the import that Superman snaps General Zod ’s neck opening to stop him from hotness - visioning a trapped family after the villainous Kryptonian snarl that Clark will never be able-bodied to truly delay him forever .
“ If you the track the floor all the way through , in term of [ Clark ] emerging , his maturity , fully kind of understanding the power he has — and when they fight , the kind of devastation that is make by it … we were seek to come up with a dead end where he could n’t just , we could n’t just do a wink , ” Goyer tell of Zod ’s ultimatum . But for the author , giving Clark the decision to go so far was also about the character count with his immatureness : the Superman who does n’t kill is the one who ’s been Superman for decade of comic book tale , while Man of Steel ’s Clark is still very much closer to that untested , unsure stripling who could n’t economize his dad .

“ He ’d just fly for the first time days before that [ fight ] , ” Goyer proceed . “ He ’s not aware of his exponent at all , or the extent [ of them ] , who ’s fight somebody who ’s say ‘ I wo n’t stop . ’ ”
But for his defence that Superman ’s choice is made by a version of the character not yet fully mindful of who he as a grinder , Goyer stands by the moment as one that brought something unexampled to Clark Kent . “ I understand that a lot of people had problem with it , ” Goyer said of the chemical reaction , “ at least when I have a hand in adjust these things you want to be as respectful to the core material as potential but you also ca n’t protect against unsuccessful person . You have to take large swings , with big swings there are big rewards . We took enormous swings with Batman Begins and The Dark Knight , that turned out to be well - experience . We were trying to tell a dissimilar variety of Superman story — a Superman report that had n’t been told before , and it ask us taking some big swings . ”

That ’s not to say the writer does n’t necessarily disagree with those critiques of Clark ’s penchant for podiatry . “ We talk about whether or not hoi polloi would take it . The editorial staff at DC had accept it . That does n’t intend it was n’t a mistake , ” Goyer concluded . “ But if you sit there and you say ‘ Oh I do n’t want to take any peril , I ’m worried I might offend a parcel of the audience , ’ I do n’t think that ’s a particularly good for you style to make a moving-picture show or a television receiver show . ”
