Every year , on April 19 , an authoritative anniversary rolls around that you may never have get wind of . To those in the know , it ’s called Bicycle Day , and it commemorates the first - ever intentionalLSDtrip .
It all started when a Swiss chemist called Albert Hofmann had a very peculiar metre while cycling home from the lab . Hofmann was the first soul to synthesize LSD back in 1938 . He did it by isolating chemical compound find in a fungus called Claviceps purpurea , which infects grasses like rye and can have someprofound effectson any man unfortunate enough toaccidentally consume it .
It ’s safe to say that Hofmann did n’t think much of his breakthrough to begin with . What we now sleep with asLSDwas actually the 25thin a long line of standardised compounds that he ’d been experimenting with , and Hofmann ’s research notes from the timereportedly revealhow no one was specially enthused by it : “ The new center , however , aroused no special interest in our pharmacologists and physicians ; examination was therefore discontinue . ”

Five long time later , though , in 1943 , Hofmann turned his aid back to LSD . As the account goes , he was intrigue by the strange sensations he had palpate when he had accidentally absorbed some of the compound through his skin , so much so that a few day later on he decided to take some deliberately . It was only 0.25 milligrams , but it was more than enough .
It was n’t long before thesensationsbrought on by the drug began to overwhelm Hofmann and he decided to head home . Unfortunately , since this was during the Second World War , the only agency of transport available was a bike , and the journey was about 4 kilometers ( 2.5 miles ) . Hofmann die in 2008 at theage of 102 .
