We ’ve been told that season 5 of The walk Dead would be“devastating . ”I’m really terrified for what ’s coming up this season , because despite the malevolent cannibal townspeople , last dark ’s premiere was as glad an conclusion I ’ve take in on TWD — and the only means it was devastating was devastatingly near . Also : holy shit Carol .
I ’ve tend to get hyperbolic about good installment of The Walking Dead ; I think I was so used to the show ’s crappiness in seasons 1 - 3 that when Scott Gimple took over as showrunner in time of year 4 , I was so pleasantly surprised by the meteoric climb in lineament that I tended to gush . But now , with a whole tone season under our belts , I think I ’ve gotten my feelings under controller — and yet “ No Sanctuary ” is decidedly one of my pet episodes of all time .
It lead off justly where it left off , with Rick and the radical trapped in a Terminus string car . They ’re heavy at workplace jury - rig whatever weapons they can detect , ready to jump the Terminus people as soon as they start the doorway . It ’s rare to see the entire chemical group so proactive and competent , and you almost think that they ’re so badass that the Term - ites are already about to get their butts kicked because they have indeed sleep together with the wrong people . And yet while Rick et al get ready to stand out the railroad train room access , the condition - ites drib a smoke grenade in the string roof , cast in wearing gasmasks , and grab Rick , Glenn , Bob and Daryl without breaking a sweat . It ’s a perfect way to remind the audience that while Rick ’s chemical group may be both proactive and badass , they are still utterly at the mercy of Terminus .
Rick and the others are dragged to a putting to death storey , because the people of Terminus are indeed man-eater — but it ’s less about thirstiness and more about a verrrry literal rendition of the mantra “ You ’re either the butcher or the cattle . ” They choose to be butchers so they wo n’t be the cattle , and this make them infinitely more terrifying than the Governor ever was . The Governor , although he was an harebrained asshole , was still human — he had passions and loves and good intentions ( sometimes ) , and when he murdered people , he killed them out of anger or hatred or retaliation . For all his fault , the Governor was still unmistakably human .
The Termites , however , kill to keep from being human . They murder ( and eat ) everyone who occur to Terminus , not out of reverence , or to protect themselves from bad guys , but to be the bad guys — to purposefully be inhuman , as its own manner of auspices . It ’s no coincidence that they have developed a system for everything from cut the throats of their prisoners ( and a line trough ) to who should respond during a crisis .
They have rules in place so they do n’t have to think about what they ’re doing ; they take to be part of a organization so they do n’t have to be people .
What the Termites did n’t figure on was the fact that this big badass in The take the air all in world is a 49 - year - onetime woman call Carol . She and Tyreese and the World ’s Quietest Baby , a.k.a . Judith , are on their direction to Terminus themselves , and come across a cabin in the Wood where one of the Termites is setting off firecrackers to draw away herd of living dead ( bright idea ) and speak about the new prisoners Michonne and Carl to someone on a walkie - talkie . They have him captured in short order , and Carol uses the cover - yourself - in - zombi - gore camouflage and heads to Terminus to rescue the mathematical group while Tyreese continue back to watch over babe Judith and their captive .
To give a blow - by - blow account of all the badass thing Carol does in her one - cleaning lady assault on Terminus would be to destroy one of the episode ’s greatest pleasures , but suffice it to say Carol even build normal badass Daryl look like … well , season one Carol . With assistance from a very large throttle tank and her rifle , Carol basically does the same thing to Terminus that the Governor did to the prison house , except she does it by herself and when she swash a maw in Terminus ’ defense lawyers , the zombi she basically mail in there are also materialise to be on fire . Carol decides to get the zombies eat her , but whether Carol doing this out of Department of Justice , or vindictiveness or ego - saving is obscure .
Meanwhile , Rick and the others do manage to escape , back to the bagful of weapon system Rick very sprucely hid before they enter Terminus last time of year . Rick ’s ready to go back to kill them all , but the others win over him not to choose the way of life of vindictiveness since they ’re all dead or run away — although it also help that Carol approaches at that second . Watching Daryl run to her and hug her is genuinely affecting , and Norman Reedus just kills it by take the air the line between his normal bad guy routine and almost sobbing in relief . But the hug between Carol and Rick is even more moving , the tearful reunion pushing away all the other issues in the heating plant of the moment . And it ’s a good thing the others convince Rick not to head back to Terminus , because rather he ’s led to the cabin , where he discovers the Wee Baby Judith is alive , and Sasha sees Tyreese again , and this episode of The Walking Dead has about as well-chosen an conclusion as I think we can ever hope for .
I feel like “ No Sanctuary ” is repeat The Walking Dead ’s military mission statement , and there are two consequence I mean that say this as well as TWD has ever say it , even if they ’re both on the nozzle . The first is when Rick and the others are escaping Terminus and they spot anther train car surrounded by zombies . Rick is ready to ignore it to pore on rescue the others in their group , but Glenn stops him : “ That ’s still who we are . The Walking Dead has always been about the difference of opinion between hold out and living , and the interrogation of the value of humanity in a populace where it ’s also a indebtedness . Never has it been spelled out so starkly as “ No Sanctuary , ” but neither has the show so triumphantly exclaim man as the winner . The Termites abandon their humans thinking it ’ll make them safe , but it ’s their viciousness that conduce Carol to kicking their ass to rescue her friends , and it does n’t make unnecessary them . The Termite mock Tyreese ’s compassion , but it ’s the group ’s corporate humanity that leads to their happy reunion — if Tyreese were n’t willing to take precaution of Judith , then Rick would never be able-bodied to reunify with her . If they were n’t undecomposed people , Carol would n’t have been compelled to lead back to the prison house to observe over them , and then rescue them . • After the credit and the next workweek ’s episode clip , a helmeted , masked fella sees Rick ’s “ No Sanctuary ” sign . It ’s Morgan ! The bozo from “ Clear ” ! The first hombre Rick saw ! What the hell is he doing ? I have this weird theory that he might end up being the TV rendering of Ezekiel , although I have no melodic theme how that would ferment .
• Speaking of theories , the rumour is the frightful guy who assaults Terminus and turn them into ogre is Negan , the next big TWD comic baddie . He ’s in shadows because the role has n’t officially been cast yet .
• There are piece of silliness in this instalment of course : the fact that the dude about to strike Glenn with a bat is interrupt the right way before he brain Glenn not once but twice ; that Carol fires a firework at the leaking flatulency army tank to go under it alight . I do n’t care .
• The Modern porta sequence seems much better , although it ’s basically a new serial publication of images in the same style . It ’s much more creepy to me , at least .
• Also , Eugene gives his origin story and explicate the “ cure , ” which amounts to “ I worked on disease to fight down diseases and I think I know a disease to struggle this one . ” It does n’t sound very convincing , but I can see how people who have not only been living in the zombie Revelation for long time but are also entrap in a railroad train car by cannibals would want to believe it .
• So you rememberthat blond cracker guy in the overallsfrom the episode where Rick and Carol went on patrol and Rick fall upon Carol set the two fed up people on fire and banished her ? He shows back up as one of the bozo capture by Terminus , who has his fountainhead bash in and pharynx slice by the Termites . More importantly , that light-haired cracker guy was flirt by Robin Lord Taylor , well have a go at it as the proto - Penguin on Gotham . That ’s blowing my psyche .
