When we first meet Alma ( Alita : Battle Angel’sRosa Salazar ) , the heroine of Amazon ’s Undone , she ’s sob behind the cycle and driving like a madman . Alma ’s at a break point , and Undone — which has a judgment - bending story and trippy visuals to match — suck you into her humans right as she ’s fall apart .
[ Note : We ’ve seen the first five ( of eight full ) episode , and wo n’t be spoiling any plot points in this review . ]

Rotoscope ’s mistily disorienting , “ life over live - action mechanism ” feel is the perfect vehicle for Alma ’s story , believe she also feels like she ’s suspended between worlds . After that out - of - ascendancy drive episode that opens episode one ( which is titled “ The Crash , ” after the single - car smash - up that sets Alma ’s journeying in apparent movement ) , we take a step back and get to know our characters a lilliputian chip .

Cracking jokes is definitely one of her coping mechanisms , but Undone also has fun with other random touches , like when Alma ’s dad gives her a pocket - sized blackjack telecasting game to help anchor her to reality — like the spinning top in Inception — which she then proceeds to play obsessionally , even when she ’s help her sister peck out wedding gowns or greeting her young students at oeuvre .

There ’s also an amusing moment where Alma , trying to find out to pitch time around so she can move keys with her mind , informs her dad that she ’s “ not a Jedi , ” which take into a whole conversation aboutStar war , which is soon recall by her don ’s Yoda - like advice to “ essay not to stress . ”
For a serial publication that get so many flights into the surreal , Undone is also surprisingly grounded . The rotoscope animation allows for functioning that finger more “ human ” than traditional or CG aliveness would , and Salazar make the most of her mussy , complicated character ; Odenkirk is also very compelling as her super enigmatical father . Alma is an treacherous teller and a profoundly flawed mortal , but the show takes the metre to show us why she ’s so messed up . For a show that runs less than 30 minutes per episode , Undone packs in a lot .
